24: Season 6 Box Set (Twenty Four) The further adventures of Los Angeles' Counter Terrorism Unit's finest initially sees Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer in a Chinese prison and not in good shape. But, this being 24, it's not too long before the breakneck plot has revved into gear, and the wheels are turning again on a frantic real-time ride that's thoroughly in the tradition of what's become television's finest thriller.
You won't be finding plot spoilers here, because half the fun of 24 is not knowing what unexpected twist the scriptwriters have for you around the next corner. All that matters is that the world is under threat, and it's up to Jack Bauer to lead the fightback. And it's Kiefer Sutherland that's the real asset to series six; whereas particularly in season five he took a sideways step to accommodate stronger supporting characters, here he's shouldering a greater degree of the show's narrative thrust. You'd be hard pushed to declare that season six is vintage 24, but that's more to do with the context of particularly the excellent run that preceded it. But few shows can match its audacious verve, and repeated ability to surprise and enthral. So while season six may have too many villains, and may ask you to bear with it through a few troughs, there's still nothing out there to match it. Jump aboard

| 5 / 5 | Another high octane, high suspence installment of Jack Bauer at his best!
Mr. B. Appleby (Cheltenham, England) - 17 March 2007 More explosions, more shocks, and more of Jack Bauer doing what he does best. Fans of 24 and those new to the series will love day 6. Once again you will be on the edge of your seat throughout, suffering from sleep deprivation because you have GOT to watch the next epsiode to see what happens. The bad press in the US regarding how the torture scenes in 24 are affecting troop morale in Iraq came out in the middle of this series, so day 6 has by no means been dumbed down from previous series, with a number of scenes that have you covering your face thinking "that's gotta hurt." Without giving too much away, there are a number of differences in this series compared to previous ones. We start the series with America in the aftermath of a sustained terror campaign, adding different dimensions to the series such as how frail and seemingly desperate the US is. Another major difference is that this series is much more personal to Jack, introducing us to more members of the Bauer family. The involvement of Jack's family as well as the experiences he endured for two years in China has also changed Jack slightly, as the memories of what has happened in his life coupled with what he has to endure in this series affect him more than ever. Once again the major characters from previous series such as Bill and Chloe remain, and we are also introduced to some new key people, who will most likely play a prominent role in future series. As per usual there are a number of different plots surrounding the primary terrorist one, most importantly how the White House deals with the aftermath of the terror attacks, and the lengths they are prepared to go to in order to stop future ones. Overall, one of the best 24 series so far, drawing on the best and most effective aspects of previous series, and adding new dimensions that keep this latest installment fresh, and not just a copy of previous series. A must for all fans of epic entertainment!... Read Full Review » |
| 2 / 5 | Substandard season for an ailing show
M. JONES "mj1001" (uk) - 12 June 2007 I'm sorry to say that was left more than a little dissapointed by the sixth season of 24 and I'm sure this review will be classed as unhelpful but this is what I thought. After it's impressive fifth season, which managed to feel fresh and included more than one decent nemesis for Jack Bauer, its back to the same old stuff (or guff). The show has started to go downhill ever since season 3 and now it just takes to recycling old material and cramming in one thing after another to end being a bit of a mess. Where the fifth season had a more personal edge, this time (and it must be the even numbers of seasons or something) we're back to fighting bland middle-eastern terrorists and staving off World War 3. After Jack's 18 months in a chinese prison, he is released but only because he's being served up as a bargaining tool to find a terrorist wreaking havoc in the US. But, having escaped, Jack and CTU begin to track down some missing suitcase nukes before time runs out. Following the pattern of sequels, season six just does everything a little bit bigger. Remember the nuke going off in season 2? Well here there are two. Before long, every episode feels like a remake of season 2, right down to the rubbish about recovering a missing *insert uninspired plot device here* which can stop a war. Then there's the utterly pointless political intrigue: remember the 'trial of David Palmer'? Well this time, its... the 'trial of Wayne Palmer'. Hell, even Jack's facial hair from season 2 returns. For some reason, considering the larger fan base and budget today, you'd expect 24 to benefit but it doesn't. Good writing is thrown out of the window in one of the worst, most ridiculous plot twist I've seen for a long time concerning a chief villain from last year. Not to mention a finale episode that was rushed through and totally anti-climactic. I just want to know where is the imagination? Why doesn't the series have any fresh ideas. What was the point of having Jack hauled off to prison in a cliffhanger climax when he would be released for next time. Surely a more interesting season could have seen Jack staying in China, perhaps trying to escape prison or carry out a covert op. But no, once again the only city that matters is LA and the only people able to do anything are CTU. I really hope they come up with something better for next time because the show is on its last legs. ... Read Full Review » |
| 5 / 5 | Jack Bauer is back in the most pulse racing season yet
Scott "Scott" (Belfast) - 19 March 2007 Yes thats right, Jack Bauer is back in one of 24s most pulse racing seasons yet. After season 5 i knew that this show was good, but after season 6 i know now that this show is so far past every other show on tv that its no longer fair to even call it a TV SHOW. This show really is amazing and after 6 years the action, the thrills and the great acting have not let up one bit. Yes some of the stuff we have seen before, assisantations, death and the mole in ctu but its 24 who cares. This season really is different than any other season. The violence this year is quite extreme, but its great as instead of moving the camera away and letting us make up our own minds as to whats going on this time it stays right where you want it, probs want of the most scremish scenes ever is on episode 2 the kneecap scene. The show also has a different format this year, yes its all real time, but this year instead of showing us how ctu deals with the terriost attacks they face, we also get to see how the personal lives of some workers can sometimes get in the way, old secrets from the past are revealed and theres a few family re-unions too. There was a few characters this year that I loved, chole as usual and Bill and of couse Jack but some who really had no point at all Sandra Palmer but lucky enough shes only in the first couple of episodes. The explosins this year are better than ever and the season begins with a great bus bomb that puts speed to shame, over the first 4 episodes theres around 6 exploins and right into episode 5 theres helicopter crashes oh and a nuke going off, which this year is so realistic. I LOVE THIS SHOW. Forget lost, csi and even prison break, 24 season 6 is the best ever, and whats great is that it deals with issues that are so revelant to us today. You will see the attacks in the first two episodes are familar to the horrbile, and disgraceful attacks on the city of london nearly two years ago, and this really hits home when you get to see it beautifully handled on 24, WELL DONE TO THE WHOLE TEAM ONCE AGAIN, thats 6 seasons and 144 episodes of pure greatness. ... | 5 / 5 | 6 of the best from Kiefer and Co..
Mr. A. J. Bryce (Southport, Merseyside) - 25 September 2007 First of all, I can't believe some of the prior reviews that rip into the 'shortfalls' of the plot etc....this isn't what 24 is about!!! Dont worry about it, just get the dvd in the machine and enjoy. In fact, get all 6 series and watch beginning to end. It'll take less time than you think it's that addictive. 24 is about involving television drama and entertainment and all six series have shown this is spades. Series 6 starts with JB (no not James Bond or Jason Bourne!) being released from Chinese captivity as the US is in a state of chaos and in the grip of terrorism...President Palmer is under mounting pressure for internment of all Middle eastern Americans, and CTU has a thread that can put an end to the endless suicide bombings....Other series have a quiet period at the beginnimg, series 6 starts right in the middle of it. There are a lot of parallels that can be made between the 24 world and the 'Real' world. I have thought to myself "If I were Amercian, Id rather have David Palmer as President" or "I cant see Donald Rumsfeld doing that!!" etc etc. This is the beauty of 24, the scope of the sub stories which mostly adds substance to the main plot. From the behind the scenes political machinations going on in Washington, to the decisions Jack and his colleagues have to make to get the job done where the stakes are high and personal stuff gets put on hold. That personal stuff for all the characters is always bubbling just above the surface though. The worlds of world politics and intelligence are murky indeed and this series(and previous)is not too far fetched. You get to know about Jack's background in this series which is an interesting twisted subplot. Anyway, still by far the greatest TV series....forget your Sopranos, Prison break, Heroes etc...Jack has still got it. Roll on Series 7 and the film (set over here in good ol' Blighty too!) | 5 / 5 | The most groundbreaking show on TV just went a step further...
N. Scarlett "Student" (Leeds, West Yorkshire United Kingdom) - 8 April 2007 Nuclear bombs going off on US soil, the most powerful nation in history at it's knees, and as usual, only one man seems to have the aptitude and skill neccessary to see it out. The man, is of course, Jack Bauer, the programme, naturally 24. Those of you who've seen the first five series, will need no prompting to buy this boxset, those of you who haven't, buy the first five series first (they're worth whatever they're charged at) and then buy this explosive, exciting and wonderful sixth series. Some people claim this series is a let down, personally, I'd say it's the equal of any series, all the new characters are excellent, President Wayne Palmer is almost as impressive as his brother, and the likes of O'Brien and Buchanon are as good as ever. It's pretty much typical 24, real time, real action, really good television!... Read Full Review » |
