Jumper [Blu-ray]As preposterous action movies go, Jumper is pleasantly unpretentious and breezily entertaining. A young man named David (Hayden Christensen) discovers he has the power to teleport (or "jump") anywhere he can visualize. After using this power to steal and make a comfortable life for himself, he pursues the girl he longed for in school (Rachel Bilson, The O. C.). But as he does so, another jumper (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) and a pack of fanatical jumper-hunters called paladins (led by a white-haired Samuel L. Jackson) crashes into David's freewheeling life. Jumper wastes no time trying to explain how jumping works or delving into the hows and whys of the paladins; this is an alluring fantasy of power directed at a pell-mell pace by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go). There's a brief moment when it feels like the movie will bog down in romance and vague gestures towards character development--happily, that's the moment when Bell appears and the whole movie shifts into overdrive. You might wish that Bell and Christensen had swapped roles; Bell has a far more engaging personality, and Christensen's bland good looks might better suit a more aggressive character. Nonetheless, Jumper has oodles of dynamism and nifty visual effects to propel its comic-book storyline forward. A variety of recognizable actors in bit parts (such as Diane Lane and Kristen Stewart, Panic Room) suggest that the filmmakers are laying the groundwork for sequels. Based on a critically-acclaimed science-fiction novel by Steven Gould. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com... Read More »

WaterElemental "phoenixflys" (UK) - 17 June 2008 The Blu-ray, Excellent picture quality & sound! Very impressed. Cool cover art, plenty of special features, all of which are in HD! The Movie, A very unique superhero film, with an interesting story of a boy who learns that he has the power of teleportation and the benefits that come with it (and later the drawbacks). Lots of future potential! Now excuse me while I go & buy the books! |

NutShell (Hong Kong) - 20 June 2008 The concept behind the movie is very good in that someone is able to transport themselves from one place to another nearly instantaneously, which also means in and out of vaults in various banks. The effects used to do this were well presented, although having lived in Egypt and having been to the Sphinx and seeing how the 'Antiquities' police are, our hero wouldn't have had much time to have done any sunbathing before being told to move on (or gestured, which was the usual trick)... The end I thought was a little anti-climatic and at the end you sort of thought "ahh, that's the end then". No real lead up to it, but I guess it does leave to door open for a sequel.... B. Chandler "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - 19 October 2008 Running David (Max Thieriot) loves little Millie (AnnaSophia Robb) with a love that couldn't die. He couldn't swim the raging river; but he leaned how to jump. What would you do if you found the ability to transport? Yep the first plan was to exacta all not nasty old paper in the local bank. Where do we go from here? For one thing it irks some people including fanatic "jumper hunter" Roland (Samuel L. Jackson.) We find new friends and enemies no known in the book. Then we have David's nagging question "Who/what is mommy? Inspired by the jumper character in the youth novels of Steven Gould the movie tried to rely more on the real world locations than graphics. They did a good job on jumper graphics. The names have not been changed just the story. In an effort not to follow the standard supper hero formula they instead relied on the Sunday afternoon T.V. children's specials formula. The film is entertaining but the efforts to be artsy or the efforts be unique are lost in the mundane and standard chase scenes. Garry Williams "Garry Williams" (London (Enfield)) - 27 June 2008 I don't care what anyone says about this movie...it's nothing if not entertaining. The special effects are great and it certainly has the cool factor. OK, so there's the odd hole in the plot...but so long as you can overlook that then you should enjoy the movie. It's obvious there's going to be a sequel... |
