Just like Marmite!

Evening all - I've just been having a very big chuckle at the reviews, and also felt like banging my head against a wall - well done to you 5 star reviewers to create the balanced review that this film needs. It appears that you either hate this film, or love it (as I said, just like marmite). But if you do dislike it, then please dislike it for the right reasons.

Firstly, can I please highlight that 1) it is a movie (therefore - fictional), 2) Ricky Gervais is a superb non-pc comedian (that means he makes fun of things, including himself, regardless of political correctness!), 3) "artistic licence" (this basically allows him to do what the hell he likes and I hope he continues).

Comments regarding the 'religious' connotations of this film simply appears to me as complete fanatacism. Why is it that if somebody dares to show a society/world without religion keeping everything in order, it is slammed as offensive? As a kid, I had absolutely no choice but to have make-believe drivel forced at me every morning at school and I can confirm that 25 years later I am yet to see any kind of proof to back that lot up!

I'm not saying 'don't put a negative review'. If you don't like the acting, don't find it funny, find it a bit predictable then please offer your view as this is entirely what this section is about - but if you simply want to go off on a complete tangent as you are hyper-sensitive over issues that should realistically remain personal then please just think to yourself - is the Amazon film review section really the place for me to post this?

I personally find it offensive to completely reject a fictional, make-believe, 'COMEDY' because it doesn't meet your oh-so strict criteria. By not allowing an opposite view to 'religious world order' to be portrayed without receiving such negative remarks is very close to being labelled as 'censorship'.

At least these reviews show that the film is being talked about and making an impact - I'm pretty certain that this is exactly what RG was after in the first place! Here's to the next one!

I bought this because i enjoyed Ghost Town and i like Ricky. It was okay, funny in places but not as good as Ghost Town.

Very weak and light on humour ....

I don't know what's going on with Ricky but I can see his film career galloping off a cliff very soon. There's only so much of the 'poor old normal guy trying to bungle his way through life but it all comes good' crap you can take. This is like his other film Ghost Town. Poor old normal guy has a gift and struggles to do the right thing. YAWN. The premise of the film has some truly hilareous potential and Ricky blows it. It's crap, boring, unimaginative and I'll lay a bet you'd never watch this one again if you buy the DVD. I know I won't and I'm already wondering how fast I can unload this disaster of cinema.

Gervais can do no wrong!

Not sure where the negative reviewers are coming from...but each to their own I guess! I found this film to be heartwarming, intriguing, moving and very funny! I like the overall concept, simple but very clever and expertly explored by Gervais and co. I would recommend to any Gervais fans out there - I was certainly not disappointed!

Watchable is as good as it gets

This is an incredibly soft movie. Gervais just goes on and on about how he is "a little pug nosed fat man" and not lying in the film seems to mean "I am thick and say whatever moronic but unfunny thought comes off the top of my head" and "I believe everything everyone says to me". There is no use of his sharp edge, timing or observational skills. The film just plods along. He has opportunities to do the wrong thing and doesn't and in the end he gets his (rather dull) girl that never seemed to want him anyway. If the idea was pushed to its limits you would get a clever film. When kept within incredibly safe boundaries it is just dull. Watch if you need to pass the time, get offended by any form of stimulation and always like to know whats going on without having to try too hard.
