Original Soundtrack - High School Musical 2Fans of High School Musical can breathe easy: Based on this soundtrack, the sequel is just as good, and perhaps even better. Though its trailer asked "Are you ready for the start of something new?" HSM2 isn't turning the franchise into The Wire, and really is more of the same--which is, of course, totally fine by us. One of the most energetic tracks is Chad and Ryan's musical/baseball number "I Don't Dance," propelled by a cool big-band swing motif (fans of director Kenny Ortega's choreographic work for Xanadu will be reminded of that movie's mash-up of disco and swing in the "Dancin'" number). Once again Troy and Gabriella get the ballads, but "You Are the Music in Me" is a fine one and doesn't get bogged down in syrup. It also gets reprised by Troy and Sharpay in a rockier and arguably better version. This is typical of the fact that, overall, the bouncier tracks fare best: "All for One" (with its handclaps and surfy guitar licks), the s! ingle "What Time Is It" (the time of our lives, of course!), "Work This Out" (complete with percussive, well, workout). Of course everybody's favorite brother-sister team, Ryan and Sharpay, gets a couple of great vehicles: "Fabulous" and the zany, Hawaiian-flavored "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a," which more than anything else sounds like a tribute to the Disney princess of the 1960s: Annette Funicello. --Elisabeth Vincentelli... | 5 / 5 | Nice follow up
Angela - 30 August 2007 This album became the soundtrack of our summer holidays. I just put it on and everyone in the car was quiet or happily singing/humming along. The songs took a few plays to grow on the adults but kids(10yrs, 5yrs and 2yrs) loved it from the beginning. As an adult I could point out some flaws but it delivers to its audience and all of us are looking forward to sitting down to watch the new movie when it airs on disneyuk.... Read Full Review » |
| 5 / 5 | FABULOUS
S. Bauer "#1 HSM2 fan" (NJ USA) - 20 August 2007 Personally, I LOVED high school musical and for ages i've been finding information about high school musical 2. When I found out i'd be in the States for the premiere i was EXTREMELY excited. I got to buy the soundtrack on the day it came out and went straight home to listen to it. 1. What time is it-I LOVE this song, it's up beat and a lot of fun. 2.Fabulous-My favourite song on the soundtrack. It's simply amazing && fabulous! It really shows what a diva Sharpay is && Ashley's voice is so good on this track. 3.Work This Out-This is a very good song&& to me it's the new 'Get'cha head in the game' 4. You are the music in me-The new 'What i've been looking for' && Kelsi gets to sing in this song! 5.I don't dance-Such a good song! The dancing in it is amazing && my favourite bit of the song is the line 'Hey batter batter hey batter swing' 6.You are the music in me (Sharpay version)-AMAZING! Sharpay makes this version so much better than the original for me personally. Also, the way it's performed in the movie is SO COOL! 7.Gotta go my own way-It's like 'When There Was Me and You' but more up beat and a lot better i'd say personally. Vocals are great also. 8.Bet On It-Vocals are very good && quite a good song. 9.Everyday-The new and personally I think better 'Breaking Free'. Very good song and the wildcats get to join in too! 10.All For One-A nice ending to the AMAZING movie. LOVE this song-excellent! 11.HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUA'A-I LOVEEEEEEEE this song soooo much!!! When Ashley does fish talk && a males voice it's soo funny! Again, another great song. Overall, after seeing the AMAZING movie and listening to the FABULOUS soundtrack, i'd definetly say you HAVE to buy or at least listen to the soundtrack and HAVE to watch the movie even if you didn't like HSM.... | 4 / 5 | Fun, but not as "Fabulous" as the First Soundtrack
Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - 23 August 2007 When I discovered High School Musical last summer, I'll admit I fell for it completely. Within a couple weeks of first seeing it, I had the movie and the soundtrack. I wasn't going to let the sequel pass me by, so I bought the soundtrack even before I saw the movie. It took quite a few listens, but I am enjoying it. The first thing I noticed is Troy's voice. If you don't believe that Zac Efron had help with the singing in the first movie, you'll believe it now. Troy sounds so different. Not saying he sound bad, but it is obvious that it's not the same singer as the first movie. All that aside, the cast does a great job. And the music is fine. It's mostly teen pop, which is why it took me a little while to get into it. It's overproduced at times, but certainly listenable. The soundtrack starts and ends with two group songs, "What Time is it" and "All for One." Easily my favorite track is the Chad/Ryan song "I Don't Dance." Troy and Gabriella get a couple nice ballad duets. I especially like "You are the Music in Me," although the Sharpay version doesn't do much for me. And that brings up my biggest complaint with the soundtrack - Sharpay. I get what "Fabulous" is supposed to do, but I really don't like the song. I feel like slapping Sharpay by the time it's over. Nothing against Ashley Tisdale, it's the song and character I can't stand. The only song she does I like is the bonus track. I would have loved to see that song in the movie. Even though it doesn't quite measure up to the first movie's soundtrack, there are some fun songs here that will have me pulling the disc out to listen to again.... Read Full Review » |
| 5 / 5 | Better than the first!
InsideMyVelvetRope (The United States of England. Yeeeeah. \m/) - 13 August 2007 Anyone who is fimiliar with the first Soundtrack should buy this one; it's even better! The songs are just as catchy, the vocals are great but this one has a little more edge to it. Great for kids, but it's also fantastic for all ages! 1/ What Time Is It/ 3:20 The first single from the album. A fantastic song, very upbeat, and the one everyone knows the words to. Just what we've came up expect from the guys. 2/ Fabulous/ 3:01 Performed by Ryan and Sharpay, my personal favourites. A brilliant tune, it's all about the glam! ;) 3/ Work It Out/ 3:04 A nice enough song, has a mild rock beat to it. Even though it is great, I don't think it's as good as some of the other songs on the soundtrack. 4/ You Are The Music In Me/ 3:28 & 6/ You Are The Music In Me (Sharpay Version)/ 2:29 The former is performed by Troy and Gabriella, and is slower than the latter where Sharpay replaces Gabriella. Both great songs; I prefer the Sharpay version for obvious reasons and it's also catchier. 5/ I Don't Dance/ 3:37 At first I did not like this song at all; it takes awhile to get used to but now I love it. It takes quite a different direction from the other songs on this soundtrack or even can't be compared to everything on the first one. It's different and that's what I like about it. 7/ Gotta Go My Own Way/ 3:42 Mostly performed by Gabriella; she provides absolutely wonderful vocals. Troy is also included. I suppose this can be classed as the album's "When There Was Me and You", although it's upbeat instead of a ballad, and of course a lot better. ;) 8/ Bet On It/ 3:20 Not really fimiliar with it. My least favourite on the soundtrack though I do enjoy listening to it. Performed by Troy. 9/ Everyday/ 4:38 Performed by Troy and Gabriella, a wonderful ballad about love and friendship when you are young and celebrating every day making the most of it. 10/ All For One/ 4:15 Yet another fabulous song from the soundtrack as we come to the end of it. 11/ Humumumunukunukuapua'a/ 3:10 Despite being hella annoying to type (!) it's a great way to close the album. Performed by Ryan and Sharpay, by far my favourite on the record. Absolutely hilarious, especially when Sharpay is 'fish-talking' and putting on a male-like voice! So, as I said at the beginning of my review, this is an absolutely wonderful soundtrack; any HSM fan should buy it. I can't wait for the film to premiere and I have high hopes for the third High School Musical. =P Do I recommend? Absolutely! ... Read Full Review » |

You Are The Music In Me />This song pops up a couple of times in the movie, and i really love hearing it. The words are great and the harmonies sound perfect 5. I Don't Dance The best dance in the whole film and one of the best songs. I love the rivalry between Chad and Ryan within this track, and it just adds to it's appeal. 6. If this track was released as a single into the charts, i'd definatly buy it!! 7. Gotta Go My Own Way I love the vocals in this song - they're so perfect for the way Gabriella feels at that point in the film, and i love singing along to this one 8.
