| 4 / 5 | A RETURN TO FORM FOR CHAKA
Mrs. Y. I. Blake - 17 August 2007 I worked out I have been a Chaka Khan fan for 33 years !!!. I so wanted this to be good - and I was not disappointed. This is a return back to the Rufus days. Great opener, track 2 is the best on the album, the pace slows down on track 3 leading to Angel which is a big ballad. Back to the funk up to the fantastic duet with Mary J Blige - two powerhouses together - fabulous. Shame the album wasn't 10 tracks as there are 3 duds - the cover of Sign O' The Times is terrible (there are dozens of other Prince tracks that would have been better to use if one had to be included ) the karaoke version of You Belong To Me is poor (again , plenty of other Michael McDonald tracks that would have been better), and the inclusion of Packed My Bags / Tell Me Something Good seems very odd - both are studio versions as performed on the Live Stompin At The Savoy Album. But, set the CD player to skip these three are the rest is just fantastic. Nt only did I want to play it over and over but it sent be back to all those great old albums as well - a re-master series waiting to happen if ever there was. Enjoy... Read Full Review » |
| 5 / 5 | Chaka hits it out the BALL PARK !
Kerwin R. Guidry - 24 September 2007 From start to finish this CD is sheer perfection. Back to REAL music on so many levels. One For All Time is so CHAKA/RUFUS 1977. Angel is a heartfelt ballad that invokes so many emotions. My favorite though is SIGN O' TIMES which she turns into a new anthem(sampling I'm Every Woman and adding new lyrics). On Will You Love Me we get the famous WALL OF CHAKA backing vocals. Back In The Day & Hail To The Wrong - funk at it's best. Castles Made Of Sand is to short - it gets good just when she goes off! Ladies Man - she works it. Even Foolish Fool works(although i was skeptical). Chaka's best CD in quite some time! ... Read Full Review » |
| 4 / 5 | Really Really Good - Doing What She Does Best!
George Olney (Wales, UK) - 10 October 2007 This is a great return to what I think Chaka does best. It demonstrates the full range of her vocal abilities. The songs are all listenable. I guess I would question the merits of re-recording classic hits as I'm not sure where the added value is. I think the duet with Michael McDonald is great and it's obvious from stuff like Back In The Day and Disrespectful why she is revered the world over by public and peers for her contribution to RnB. My favourite Chaka album since CK was released in the late 80's! Check it out.... Read Full Review » |
| 5 / 5 | Nothing Wrong With An Old Hat
The Wolf (uk) - 10 August 2008 Anyone who knows me well would be certain to tell you about my fondness for hats. I am a Wolf who owns and wears many hats. More than fifty in The Cave at the last count. A veritable Imelda Marcos of hats. My favorite hat is a very old hat. It once belonged to a woodcutter. How I came to own it must, to some degree, be left to your imaginations. Suffice to say that its' acquisition involved a totally justified act of revenge on my part for the death of my great-great grandfather, following a complex and regrettable chain of events which has become remembered over time in woodland lore as 'The Red Bonnet Incident'. It is a brown and somewhat battered brown felt fedora with two holes cut in the top to accomodate my ears. Which brings me in a roundabout sort of way to Ms Khan's new album 'Funk This'. Nothing wrong with an old hat then. This I think we have comfortably established. The question for us here then must be - Does Ms Khan still give good hat ? I saw her for the first time in 1972, singing in a small but not insignificant musical venue in deepest, darkest Essex. The stage was low and I was hunkered down at the front witnessing one of the most electrifying performances of my young and hairy life at that time. The sweat flew all around from her wildly flailing mane drenching everyone standing in the first two rows. I did not wash for a fortnight. The eleven tracks which make up this new album are a gift. The voice is still remarkably intact all the way through its extensive and extraordinary register. Soulful; technically brilliant and retaining the capacity to strip paint off ceilings. This lady can still throw down a five-part harmony in the studio like there's no tomorrow ! Highlights must include funky opening track 'Back In The Day' - Vintage Khan. 'One For All Time' - a gorgeously soulful ballad. This track, together with 'Angel' are two of the very best vocal performances of her 35+ year career. 'Disrespectful' is a storming and worthy duet with Ms Blige which could knock the spots off a leopard. Ms Khan's take on the small purple one's 'Sign Of The Times' gives the original a real run for its' money. 'Ladies Man' - soft, sexy and full of sweet soul honey. 'Hail To The Wrong' - another vintage funktastic classic. The band is splendid. The production is cool, slick and accomplished. Trust me - old or not we all need a hat like this in our lives. The real deal - A true Diva indeed. Highly Recommended.... Read Full Review » |
| 5 / 5 | A fine return by one soul music's greatest singers.
Michaelw89 "JazzFunkSoul" (London, UK) - 3 December 2007 Known for the ladies anthem "I'm Every Woman", the memorable cover of the Prince song "I Feel For You" and being the lead vocalist for 70s funk band Rufus, Yvette Marie Stevens (aka Chaka Khan) releases her new album titled Funk This. The unique attribute of Ms Khan is her voice, within the world of music it's distinctive & this new CD reiterates this forcefully, an album that at times takes you back to those exciting days when she was with Rufus yet at the same time its production is a very modern sound. Chaka continues her association with Prince by doing a haunting version of "Sign O The Times" in a way only she can, teams up with modern R&B singer Mary J.Blige on the percussive sounding "Disrespectful". But what carries this set are the remaining tracks such as "Back In The Day", "One For All For Time", "Pack My Bags/You Got The Love", "Hail To The Wrong", "Super Life", the excellent ballad "Angel" and "You Belong To Me" featuring the unique vocal of Michael McDonald. It's almost ten years since Chaka Khan released any new material, if this album is anything to go by here's hoping we don't have to wait another ten years, a quality album from an outstanding singer. ...
