Adele - 19It's right there; on the cover, the spine, or illuminating from your iPod screen. But it's hard to corroborate it in your mind. London singer-songwriter Adele's debut album is titled 19, referencing her age, and there are hints it's true--its themes are almost exclusively concerned with young love's highs and (mostly) lows and there's a clipped estuary English tide-mark to her voice, allying her with the fresh-faced modern female songwriting guard; Lily Allen, Kate Nash, et al. But the sheer weight of her maturity--vocally, emotionally and in overall poisereally reduces that all to circumstantial evidence. Adele is carrying something much bigger here, you can't help but be consumed by it on "Daydreamer" with it's jazzy tip-toeing guitar and elastic vocal range and "Hometown Glory" with its deep, lonely piano serving as a bed for the raw emotional undressing that takes place above it. Draw a line between timeless, powerful singers like Ella Fitzgerald and the modern standard of Amy Winehouse; Adele balances and pirouettes confidently along that tightrope. Winehouse particularly informs the likes of "Cold Shoulder" and double-bass heavy "Best for Last", and that's not an alignment that's ever going to be easy to realise credibly. Needless to say, she does, with ease. On future classic "Chasing Pavements" she also gives a nonsensical phrase a handful of heart in lieu of meaning and when you can pull that off convincingly you know you're in possession of something special. Who dares to dream what bigger numbers could bring. --James Berry... Read More »

| 1 / 5 | What is the fuss about?
Lucy Smith (Dublin) - 10 March 2008 One of a bunch of samey artist to be applauded and promoted, and to what end? This is such a boring album. Yes, the girl can sing, but the songs are extremely derivative, and, saying that, not derivative enough to appeal for very long. Ten years ago, and 5 years hence she would have been/will be in the local church choir instead. I have listened to this album more than a few times, wanting to give it a proper hearing, but I just don't want to listen to it any more than I did the second or third time. Which was not at all. Everybody I know who has heard this album says the same. It is hype. She won't last. Sorry.... Read Full Review » |
| 1 / 5 | Should I give up or should I just keep chasing Amy
Tube Monkey "Tube Monkey" (Folkestone, UK) - 18 January 2008 I say No! No! No! The singing style is so obviously lifted from the Amy Winehouse school of vocals as to be an embarrassment. There has been a gap in the market for this type of vocal delivery while Tattoohouse has been in and out of rehab. The cynical among us might say that nature abhors a vacuum and look who the marketing men have supplied to fill it? Well guess where I stand. One reviewer says she's been around for a few months. Probably the same amount of time Winelake has been out the game. Catch my drift. As for the lyric 'just keep chasing pavements'? What on on earth does this facile and fatuously banal lyric mean. Nothing basically. In effect you can see the empty headed thought process which started with 'just keep chasing rainbows'. Hmmm that's too obvious and been done before. Let's make it more modern. '...chasing payments'...No too mercenary. 'Pavement!' that's it! Oh god give me strength. Utter pish as they say north of the border. Please Amy, get out of rehab, come back and show this up for the wannabee X-factor lift music it really is.... Read Full Review » |
| 5 / 5 | pure "my back begins to tingle" genius
S. J. Page "J" (uk) - 12 December 2007 words are not enough to describe this girls amazing vocal and song writing talent. I've heard her compared to Amy Winehouse, who herself, is an awesome talent, but Adele needn't be compared to anyone, she stands alone in her originality, look forward to seeing her go from strength to to strength - the best thing i've heard in along time - thanks Adele |
| 2 / 5 | Re Terry wogan
Jack Soon (Britain) - 8 January 2008 Today I heard Terry Wogan say after playing the song about pavements "don't we have a lot of croaking female singers at the moment who all sound the same." Couldn't improve on that comment |
| 5 / 5 | AWESOME
Mr. K. J. Hirst "Kenbriooo" (Worcester, UK) - 9 January 2008 Adele has been around for many months now and her song Hometown Glory was her breakthru song, and a total master piece. Her voice and lyrics are currently 2nd to no-one. I suggest if you are unsure you simply go to her myspace page and listen to some of her songs... then quickly get back here and order the album! She will be the biggest UK female artist of 2008 with awards a plenty of that I am sure. Yes there are many female singers around at the moment, but none and I mean none of the quality or uniqueness of this talented young lady. Don't Miss this one!!... Read Full Review » |
